University of Melbourne Middle East expert Dr Denis Dragovic spoke to Sky News' PVO program, hosted by Peter Van Onselen, about why attacking Islamic State with guns blazing is not the right approach. He says it will take working closely with locals to identify Islamic  State members.

Given the complexity of any potential conflict and the lack of viable alternatives in Iraq and Syria, it may be better to contain the threat of the Islamic State (IS) rather than attempt to destroy it.

Dr Denis Dragovic tells Sky News the Islamic State's staying power depends on its success in three pillars: legitimacy, public security and provision of basic needs (food, water, shelter).
