There is no certainty that Vladimir Putin can convince the seperatists controlling Eastern Ukraine to cooperate with international investigations into the crash of MH17, Dr Jesse Dillon Savage told Sky News.

Dr Savage said it is hard to see Putin being too resistant to any "reasonable request" for an independent investigation into the disaster. There is increasing moral pressure on European countries to join the US in tougher sanctions against Russia to ensure that this happens. How this plays out in the Ukraine, however, will depend on who is in control on the ground and whether they are prepared to accept instructions from Russia.

Dr Savage is a lecturer in international relations in the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Melbourne.
