David McRae told ABC News 24 on 19 August 2014 the Australia-Indonesian relationship will be strengthened with a new co-operative agreement on issues of mutual interest, including intelligence sharing.

He said this joint understanding on a code of conduct will used by both countries to build stronger ties in the future, with their equal co-operation on regional issues. Establishing personal ties is also important to the relationship, with Prime Minister Abbott likely to attend the inauguration of President-elect Joko Widodo in October, and the expectation that Widodo will make an early visit to Australia at the G20 summit in November.

Dave McRae is a senior research fellow at the University of Melbourne’s Asia Institute and an associate in the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society.
