The agreement between the two superpowers represents a substantial commitment to co-operate on issues of international importance. Climate change is now a ‘red hot item’ for the next US Presidential election. For China, peak coal emissions have already been reached and overall they are likely to peak even before 2030. Australia’s focus on the ‘here and now’ will determine what is possible to happen in the future, by putting in place the investments now for what will be needed by 2030.
