University statement on student safety in Nice

The University of Melbourne can confirm that four of its current students were in Nice during the Bastille Day truck attack.

The students, all part of the Melbourne Accelerator Program, were in the city to participate in the European Innovation Academy. The University has reached out to these students and has confirmed that all four are safe and unharmed.

The University is continuing to review the travel logs of staff and students and conduct welfare checks with those who may have been in the city at the time of the attack.

As a University community we express our deepest condolences to all of those affected by the attacks. The University will make available counselling and support services to those affected by the incident, including staff and students from France currently based in Melbourne.

The University notes that a state of emergency remains in place across France. Australian government advice for anyone currently in Nice is to stay indoors, and to contact family and loved ones to let them know of their safety.
