Human rights and international law expert Professor Hilary Charlesworth, says that Australia's appointment to the UN Human Rights Council gives the country an opportunity to examine its own human rights record.
The award is a recognition by Australian higher education leaders for a career of outstanding service to the sector.
Professor Davis was presented with the award during the AFR Higher Education Summit 2018 in Melbourne.
The AFR award recognises that Professor Davis has contributed significantly to the higher education sector over an extended period, including through the creation of the Melbourne Model curriculum reform and as a policy advocate for higher education.
“He is the leading figure in Australian higher education,” Australian Financial Review Higher Education Editor Rob Bolton said of Vice-Chancellor Davis.
Professor Davis has been Vice-Chancellor at the University of Melbourne for 13 years and was previously Vice-Chancellor at Griffith University.
A measure of his leadership impact has been the University of Melbourne rise from 92 to 38 in the Academic Ranking of World Universities during his tenure.
