The University of Melbourne ranks in the world’s top universities for Arts and Humanities

The University of Melbourne has climbed six places in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for Arts and Humanities, from 41 in 2017 to 35 in 2018.

University of Melbourne Provost Margaret Sheil congratulated all the staff and students who had contributed to the University of Melbourne being the only Australian university to improve its position.

“This significant achievement reflects the impact of our success in attracting non-traditional forms of research funding and international outreach, coupled with considerable investment in research and teaching and learning,” Professor Sheil said.

“We cannot rest on our laurels, though. These rankings confirm the trend seen in the recent overall World University Rankings – the fast growth of our regional neighbours.

“Australian universities cannot afford to be complacent, especially amid current uncertainty around the future of our higher education system."

The Arts and Humanities subject ranking highlights leading universities in art, performing arts, languages, history, philosophy, theology, architecture and archaeology.

In 2018, the subject ranking has expanded to include 400 institutions. 25 Australian universities are now represented, with 10 in the top 200.
