The Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design at the University of Diego Portales in Chile, Mathias Klotz will be at the University of Melbourne on Tuesday March 16.

Mr Klotz says that his work is driven by the search for a sense of belonging.  “I am interested in belonging to a place - that is what my work is about…One of the diseases of any discussion in current architecture is the lack of place.”

“This question of where, physically and philosophically a project is, is maybe the issue that worries me. The project must be in a particular place; not having a place means it does not exist. At the moment we are surrounded with buildings without a project, without a place or, worse still, without common places.”

Based in Santiago, Mathias Klotz is one of the most prolific architects working in South America today, forging a career as both an architect and educator.

Mathias has achieved international recognition for his residential, commercial and public architecture – designing houses, hotels, conference centres and schools which are spacious, precise and elegant, utilising local materials and technology.  His work encompasses a concern for the environment, local history and culture and a strong sense of place.

In this lecture, the first in the Dean’s Lecture Series for 2010, Mathias will present a visual survey of his recent works and discuss his architectural practice and vision.

To coincide with the lecture, an exhibition of selected works by Mathias Klotz will be on display in the Wunderlich Gallery, 8-19 March.
