Ka Faii is one of 178 graduating students from the department whose work will feature as one of 55 projects displayed at this year’s Meridian exhibition. His team’s project is a system designed to detect bushfires using small sensors.

"The sensors are not much bigger than the palm of your hand, and are placed in and around bushfire regions. Via the GPRS network these sensors collect data such as temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide levels to assess the risk of a bushfire. If the assessment of this data places the region in a high risk, the system is set up to warn people via email or SMS," he says.

Ka Faii and his team hope to see their system used to help save lives and protect communities.

Other projects on display at Meridian involve students using maths instead of energy to heat houses, knowing when to fix a road before permanent damage occurs, and building robots that play soccer and compete in sumo competitions.
