International Women's Day at the University of Melbourne

Two women holding hands

To celebrate International Women's Day on Tuesday 8 March 2016, we recognise the incredibly talented, inspiring and dedicated women we have working here at the University of Melbourne.

Here are just some of their stories:

Dr Lan Anh Hoang has 17 years of research experience looking at issues of migration, sex and gender, children and childhood and social identity and belonging. Her research has taken her to nine countries, including Vietnam, Australia, the UK, Singapore, Russia, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. She recently completed a large-scale research project on migrant parents and the health and well-being of left-behind children in southeast Asia. Her current research project looks at irregular Vietnamese migrants in Moscow, Russia.

Professor Cathy Humphreys has made an extensive contribution towards ensuring the safety of women and children through her research into out-of-home care, domestic violence and child abuse. She continues to engage closely with government and the not-for-profit sector to apply her findings to the development of changes in policy and practice. Her breadth of research includes: the centrality of child abuse in the context of adult domestic violence, domestic violence as an attack on the mother-child relationship and the intersection of domestic violence with issues of mental health and substance abuse.

Dr Margaret Ayre's research focuses on the practices of adaptive governance in agricultural regions and on Indigenous estates. She believes women play a critical role in leading, designing and implementing strategic responses to complex challenges, such as water resource management, food security and climate change. Her collaborative research is aimed at increasing stakeholder engagement to allow for better regional coordination and service delivery to farmers. A recent research project was focused on supporting irrigators to respond to changes in water policy in northern Victoria.

Dr Reihana Mohideen is an international development specialist working on energy systems. An international development specialist, Dr Mohideen supports community development projects working with women in urban and rural poor communities in Asia. She is particularly interested in the implications of clean and renewable energy development on gender equality. She believes modern energy access is an important indicator of poverty and social development, as well as women's place and status in society.

Dr Georgina Such works to improve the way drugs are delivered by examining functional materials for biomedicine. Her research is focused on developing 'smart' capsules to hold drugs that respond intelligently in the body. It allows the capsules to circulate in the blood stream for extended periods of time - without damaging the body - before then degrading at the specific site of the cancer. These capsules are synthesised to operate like a set of Russian dolls, where each section is responsive to different biological conditions.
