Former Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella will join the University of Melbourne as a Public Policy Fellow, contributing to public debates of national importance and helping teach students.

Over more than a decade in Federal Parliament, Mrs Mirabella served as Shadow Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research and sat on various Parliamentary Committees (including Foreign Affairs, Defence & Trade and Electoral Matters).

Mrs Mirabella said she's excited to be rejoining the University of Melbourne, where she previously studied Law and Commerce.

"I hope to be able to impart some real life experience about politics," she said. "It's one thing looking at 'Politics 101', it's another thing to look at how things actually operate."

Mrs Mirabella will be involved in all aspects of public life at the University, including delivering lectures, holding seminars, contributing to workshops and assisting students.

The Head of the University's School of Social and Political Sciences, Professor Adrian Little, said securing Mrs Mirabella has been a real coup.

"Sophie's experience in public policy and deep understanding of politics will be invaluable."

"We all look forward to her insights and contributions while at the University."

Mrs Mirabella is a former President of the Melbourne University Liberal Club and Vice-President of the Australian Liberal Students' Federation.

She will begin her part-time posting immediately.

The University's only other dedicated Public Policy Fellow is Nicholas Reece, a former senior adviser in the Bracks/Brumby and Gillard governments.
