The University of Melbourne, in partnership with VicRoads, has today launched a world first “living laboratory” on the streets of Carlton and Fitzroy to research high-tech solutions to ease road congestion and enhance safety.

The fringe of Melbourne’s CBD will become a connected transport living lab from this year, in an ambitious project that will connect data from vehicles, bicycles, transport infrastructure and more, to prevent traffic jams and crashes, and cut travel times and carbon emissions.

The noise of traffic, machinery and air conditioners may be driving birds with low-pitched songs away from cities, and leading others to raise the pitch of their singing to be heard above the din.
