Forty-six of Victoria’s highest achieving VCE students have been offered National Scholarships to study at the University of Melbourne in 2012, following the release of results this morning.

Professor Margaret Sheil, the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Research Council, will be the next Provost of the University of Melbourne.

The University of Melbourne has increased the number of offers for undergraduate places to students from financially, socially or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds by almost 10 percent from last year.

The University of Melbourne's strong number of offers are evidence of an increased demand for the University's new generation degrees, says Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar.

"This represents a resounding endorsement of the new-gen degrees, and the Melbourne Model of which they form a part.  Students clearly welcome the focus the new degrees place on disciplinary depth and intellectual breadth, as well the outstanding pathways to professional graduate study, research training opportunities, or employment."
