The future of design education will be on display from next week, with designs for the new Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning on showcase for the first time.

Two postgraduate students from the Melbourne School of design were awarded prestigious awards by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The awards commend the students’ contribution to Indigenous housing and the role of architects in increasing the quality of life in developing nations.

The performance spotlight will shine on backstage talent as Production graduates from the Victorian College of the Arts, School of Performing Arts, showcase their work in set design, costume, workshop, sound, lighting and stage management.

The Melbourne School of Design is running a competition that could help transform the humble re-locatable or ‘portable’ classroom into an interactive learning space for 21st century learning. 

University of Melbourne students will be investigating how cities can be more gender ‘inclusive’ this week, as part of a travelling design studio to Montreal, Canada.

On the 175th birthday of the city of Melbourne, Professor Miles Lewis says the city needs to overcome a long history of 'planning anarchy' to continue to grow.  

"Planners have lost their vision of what planning needs to be.  When town planning was introduced here after World War 2 it was seen to be a rather socialist activity, where you distributed the goods across the community in the best possible way.  Now it's seen to be a task of facilitating development, which it shouldn't be."

Students from the Melbourne School of Design at the University of Melbourne are converting old shipping containers into new community centres for the Gudorrka Community and Knuckey’s Lagoon Community in the Northern Territory.  

The roles existing cities and buildings have to play in a carbon free future are the central debate in a new Masters of Architecture Design Studio exhibition, to officially open tomorrow night.
